Every applicant for a tourist visa must demonstrate sufficient ties.
What are ties (the things that bind us to our home):
A person living a good full life here has a strong tie.
A married person traveling without their spouse has a strong tie.
A person living in a good home, they or their spouse own, as a strong tie.
A person working in a business that provides their income has a strong tie.
A parent traveling without their young children has a strong tie.
A person with many personal, community, and business obligations has ties.
An employee with a good job and regular salary has a good tie.
A person active in their community has a good tie.
A student enrolled in a multi-year school has a tie.
Aside from ties any trip must be logical for the person making it. If a tourist trip fails the common sense test the visa will fail.
An example: A young adult applicant (particularly one who does not own a home) does not spend a large percentage of their family's accumulated wealth (say $5000 of the $10,000 in their cash savings) to visit cousins or aunts in a distant country for several weeks or months. There is some hidden purpose to the trip; visa rejected. There are no set percentages and a good cover letter explicating purpose of the trip can often help as much as another $10,000 or $20,000 in the bank.
Likewise a young single woman does not suddenly spend several times her yearly income to visit a foreign country for a brief visit without good cause.
Exact rules and procedures vary sometimes significantly by country, but this information applies in general to most western countries: USA, UK, Canada, Australia, NZ and EU.
Some countries rarely allow tourist visas for girlfriends and insist they apply as fiancees, de facto spouses, or spouses; others will let girlfriends visit as tourists if the purpose of the trip is properly explained.
I have seen tourist visa applicants with hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank fail to go to the USA and Australia due to lack of ties. I later got one of those applicants a coveted USA visa by properly documenting sufficient ties. I have sent poor clients with: no land, no job, no money and no spouse to Europe to visit close family. The EU is the easiest the USA the most difficult.
Misconceptions:
A return ticket is necessary, but it is meaningless in proving someone plans to return.
Money in the bank is nice but it is meaningless in proving someone will return.
Visiting distant relatives (not close family) is meaningless for many people as it does not make economic sense as the main purpose of a once in a lifetime trip.
A new blank passport is bad, true; but a passport with one trip to Thailand and one trip to Vietnam is little better.
Having a new bank account with big money helps, no it just raises more questions; sometimes it is better to have a sponsor.

Neko je već pitao ali niko nije odgovorio.
I još nešto, da li potrebno podnosi dokumenta vezana za bračni status? Npr. ako sam razvedena da li trebam podneti sudsko rešenje?
